Artist Retreats

Artists and writers have long used retreats as a way to regain their creative process. It seems a romantic notion from Victorian novels, but there are many such places. Artists retreats are more popular than ever.

Most are in remote areas. The author afflicted with writer's block can get away from everything and find his voice again. The artist may get new inspiration from a different setting. Musicians often go on retreat to get new ideas and jam with other musicians.

They do not have to be far from a city though. The Yaddo, in Saratoga Springs, New York is a stone's throw from downtown, but it seems a million miles away. I have been intrigued by it since moving to this area. The gardens are open to the public and they are beautiful. You cannot get near the mansion though. It is strictly out of bounds to provide the residents with the privacy they need. Just walking the grounds, you would never know that the Northway is nearby. It's quiet and peaceful.

While many people prefer a solitary existence, group retreats are also popular. You can be with people in your chosen field of art and bounce ideas off each other. There are retreats for crafts, photography, woodworking, and drama.

Teaching retreats and artist colonies offer a great experience for beginners and established artists. Writer's workshops are often weekend retreats. Beginning writers get to learn from established writers and established writers may get new ideas.
