Team Building Retreats

Team building retreats, also known as corporate or management retreats are used by major companies as a training device for their employees. Their hope is to build some company loyalty and team spirit.

There's a lot of evidence that it works. Companies are booking these retreats in increasing numbers. They are usually held at large convention centers where meeting rooms are available, but outdoor activity is also used to help build the team.

When people are engaged in physical activity, it's easier to talk about some things as opposed to being summoned to the corporate offices. Many physical challenges are issued. People may be split into groups and given supplies and tasks to complete, some like a fancy scavenger hunt.

The hope is that employees will put their heads together and find a way to complete the task. Competition with other groups spurs them on. Creative ways to solve problems are the result. I especially like the exercise illustrated in the Geico commercials, falling backwards and trusting that some member of your team will catch you. You'd better hope it isn't someone you've alienated in the past.

Of course there are meetings and strategy sessions, but business in an informal setting doesn't seem quite so much like work. There is time to have fun on your own as well.

It is beneficial to get to know your bosses outside an office setting and the challenges give everyone a chance to show off their strengths. You may all learn things about each other you did not think possible, and develop a better working relationship when you get back to work.
