Wellness Retreats
You may be surprised to find that wellness retreats are not a new thing. They used to be called sanitariums (health resort) or sanatoriums (hospitals).
Sanitariums came about as a treatment for tuberculosis before antibiotic therapy was developed. The belief was that fresh air, good nutrition, and often high altitude would allow the body's immune system to wall off pockets of tuberculosis.
The first sanitarium in North America was built in 1885, The Adirondack Cottage Sanitarium, in Saranac Lake, New York. Sanitariums were common in Europe and in Russia had a slightly different meaning. They were more like today's wellness retreats, offering resort recreational facilities combined with medical facilities.
Most sanitariums have been long since demolished, but some have survived to be used for other things. Many are believed to be haunted and are popular destinations for ghost hunters and are often featured in horror movies.
One thing has not changed. Doctors today still know that a healthy diet and environment are beneficial for people fighting long term illness. Today's wellness retreats combine a healthy diet with typical spa offerings like massage therapy and healing baths. The mineral baths in Saratoga Springs, New York are still in use today.
You don't have to sick to go to a wellness retreat. Some people just like to recharge and get back on track to a healthy lifestyle. Whatever the reason, wellness retreats can be found in almost any area of the country.
