Winter Retreats

If you live in the great Northeast as I do, winter retreats probably conjure up an image of some tropical paradise. OK, anywhere at all that is warmer than here. Winters are so long and as a Southern transplant I can say that by January I am thoroughly sick of it and long for sun and sand.

Certainly there are some great packages to get you out of the cold and to Disney World, Mexico, or the Caribbean. Ah yes, warm weather and umbrella drinks. Never mind that when you return it will be back to winter until mid May. Check with your travel agent and flee.

Some deluded people actually like winter. They love the "change of seasons." A retreat for them may involve a ski vacation. They can frolic in the snow, ski to their hearts content and relax later in a cushy lodge. I vote for the roaring fire, hot cocoa, hot tub, you get my drift, anything hot.

So many places offer Christmas vacation packages to get you out of your everyday life. Christmas in Aspen, Christmas in New York, Christmas in Vail, or Christmas in Europe.

My personal favorite winter retreat was a trip to Jekyll Island, Georgia. My husband and I were a bit short of cash and did not make our yearly Christmas visit to his family in New York. We saw an ad for the Holiday Inn on Jekyll for a whole week stay, the cost $100.00 cash. Jekyll had long been a favorite retreat of mine so we went.

It was glorious! It was uncrowded, still warm enough to walk on the beautiful beaches. The cottages were beautifully decorated for Christmas and the moonlight tour was tres romantique. We still talk about that little retreat and it remains one of our favorites.

So, you don't have to go to a fancy spa or exotic locale. You just want to break your routine, so think outside the box.
